about

In my grandmother's immense library of paperbacks at her beach house, there was a book called "The Moon's A Balloon" by David Niven. I read it one summer as a kid, and maintained a lifelong love of the actor/author. Didn't realize until later that he snatched the title phrase from e e cummings. And so it goes...

This is an oldie that I've record a few times previously over the years, but never felt it got the feel quite right. This is, I suppose, the "big" version, and now I'm thinking it might do well with a "small" version. Don't hold your breath, but we shall see.

lyrics

The moon's a balloon
That's what David Niven said...

I touched the sky with my hands
I grabbed the sky and took it home
I put it in a bottle next to the salt & pepper
So I can look at it when I eat

Everyone says what's said is said
But I've got some of the air that you talked into

I kissed the sun with my lips
I licked the sun with my tongue
I swallowed it down into my stomach
'Cause I saw you do the same

When anyone says the weather's bad out
I think about how it felt to kiss your lips & mouth
How it felt to kiss your mouth

The moon's a balloon
The moon's a balloon
e e cummings
e e cummings

about

The Marble Tea Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey

Drawing mandalas and watching Captain Kangaroo...that's pretty much what it's like in here. I enjoy writing songs about my cats and cartoon insects, but I'm also fond of feeling up the tentacles that lead to the oneness of existence. That's the Marble Tea experience.

Recommended for fans of Jonathan Richman, Robyn Hitchcock, Jazz Butcher, Magnetic Fields, etc.
